The Swiss women were beaten 6-0 by the Czech Republic in the opening game of the World Cup in the packed Lonza Arena.
It was exciting to see how the Swiss would perform on the international stage after a 9-year absence. In the end, the Czech team's victory was well deserved, but the young Swiss women nevertheless earned plenty of applause. It was not surprising that the 2017 world champions were able to take control of the game right from the start. However, the Swiss were well organised and had a goalkeeper in their ranks in Anja Tschirren who delivered an outstanding performance and thwarted numerous great chances from the Czech side. By the end of the game, the young Grenchen player had made 33 saves, some of them spectacular. It was not until the 20th minute that the attacking attempts of the favoured Czech team were rewarded. Kosinova scored to make it 0:1, after which coach Christen's team briefly lost control. The experienced Czech players took advantage of this brief phase to score three more goals within five minutes and thus ensure a preliminary decision after two thirds. At the end, the Czech team's victory was a little too high, at least from a Swiss perspective. Considering that today's match was the first ever international appearance for many of the players, we can look forward not only to the rest of the tournament, but also to the upcoming years. The Swiss will continue the tournament tomorrow Sunday (13:30) against the USA.
